A trader purchased 500 calculators at ₹450 each. He spent ₹15,000 on transportation and ₹10,000 on packaging. During transit, 25 calculators were damaged and sold at ₹250 each. The remaining calculators were sold at ₹560 each. Find the overall profit percentage.

Total CP

= (500 × 450) + 15,000 + 10,000

= ₹2,50,000

Total SP

= (475 × 560) + (25 × 250)

= ₹2,66,000 + ₹6,250

= ₹2,72,250

Profit

= ₹22,250

= (22,250 ÷ 2,50,000) × 100

= 8.9%

A shopkeeper marks an article 80% above its cost price. He allows 15%, 10%, and 5% successive discounts. Find the profit percentage.

Question 53

A dealer purchased 240 bags of wheat at ₹1,600 each. Transportation cost was ₹24,000. He sold 180 bags at ₹1,950 each and the remaining bags at ₹1,500 each. Find the overall profit percentage.

= (240 × 1,600) + 24,000

= ₹4,08,000

= (180 × 1,950) + (60 × 1,500)

Percentage Factor Method

Instead of calculating each price separately, convert everything into multiplication factors.

  • Markup 70%× 1.70
  • Discount 25%× 0.75
  • Discount 12%× 0.88
  • Discount 8%× 0.92

Now multiply the factors directly:

1.70 × 0.75 × 0.88 × 0.92 = 1.03224

This means the Selling Price = 103.224% of the Cost Price, so the Profit = 3.224%.

Banking Exam Tip: Whenever a question has multiple markups or discounts, always use the factor method. It is much faster than calculating each intermediate price separately and reduces the chance of calculation mistakes.
